Illustrating Pokey

In two dimensions, Pokey is drawn in flat color with a thin black ink line, in the Department's own palette. He goes wherever the story needs him, and he always goes in uniform.

Reference

The news desk is the reference drawing: every color and every piece of the uniform is shown as it should be.

Style

  • Line: a thin, even black ink line around every shape. No heavy outlines, no hatching for shade.
  • Color: flat fills. Shadows, where there are any, are a single darker flat tone of the same color.
  • Texture: a light paper grain over the whole picture, as if printed.
  • Feathers: a few small scalloped ink marks on his chest. That is all the feather detail he needs.
  • Eyes: large and round behind the glasses, with a single highlight. Closed, they are a simple curved line.
  • Settings: drawn in the same style as Pokey, with ruled perspective for rooms and buildings. Department places use Department colors; the wider world can use its own.

His colors

Illustrated, Pokey is made almost entirely of the brand palette.

Feather grey is Pokey's own color and is not part of the brand palette. Sampled from the reference drawing. The 3D model on Meet Pokey is textured in the same colors.

The uniform

Pokey is always in uniform. These pieces are never left off:

  • Beanie. Black knit, ribbed.
  • Glasses. Round, thick black frames.
  • Hoodie. Black, worn open.
  • Shirt and tie. White collar, black tie.
  • Vest. Safety Yellow, with stitched edges.
  • Lanyard and ID. Beaurocracy Blue lanyard, ID badge at the chest.

Anything else is added on top of the uniform, never instead of it: swim goggles over the beanie, swim trunks for the pool, shorts for the bike. When the story calls for it, the vest can be reissued, as in the orange vest of the mugshot.

Do

Draw him in flat color with a thin black line, in his uniform colors, and give him a world to be in.

Don't

Shade him with gradients, outline him heavily, or draw him in any other style. In 3D, use the model.
