Physical media

Records, tapes and disks carry the same typographic and grid system as everything else the Department prints: black stock, Manila ink, hairlines, and Neue Haas Grotesk on the column lines.

Record jackets

Natural Earth Field Recordings Volume One: The Urban Ecosystem, New York City, from the Office of Public Awareness. Drag to turn the jacket, or use the arrow keys.

Anatomy

  • Front: four hairlines divide the jacket. The series sits small above the title; the title is Display Bold, set large across three lines, overprinting a single line drawing. The office line, in Roman, sits between the middle hairlines, and a short description runs underneath.
  • Back: the seal and catalogue number top, the full title, then the track list in two columns by side. A colophon and the simplified mark close the bottom.
  • Stock: black board, printed in Manila. The opening is on the right.
  • Illustration: one line drawing per release, Manila hairline, with dot pattern fills from the pattern library. It can run behind the title but never above it.

Cassettes

The J-card and shell label follow the record jacket. On the label: the title in Bold, the division in Roman, the side letter reversed out of a black square, and the simplified mark.

VHS

A black sleeve with hairlines top and bottom. The seal at left, the tape length in Display Light at poster size, and the catalogue number in Bold. Three diagonal bands run off the corner in Manila, Embargo Red and Beaurocracy Blue.

Floppy disks

Floppy disks are still one of the most popular ways to carry and transfer files at the Department, for their abundance and security. Black or Manila shells; the seal at 22mm on the label, the catalogue number top right.

Manual spread: black and white floppy disks with the seal, a black VHS sleeve marked T-120 with Manila, Red and Blue diagonal stripes, and a black record sleeve for Natural Earth Field Recordings Vol. 3 with a line drawing of a pigeon, beside a branded cassette.

Catalogue numbers

Every item carries a catalogue number: DI followed by four digits. Set it in Neue Haas Grotesk Bold, at the top right, on a column line.

Do

Keep to black stock and Manila ink. Let one line drawing carry the release.

Don't

Print photographs on a jacket, or add a second ink color to the front.
